2011 CEIA Schools Lego Robot Competition - SpaceBotTM
For the past four months, Cork students were busy engineering Spacebots to compete in the final of the 7th Annual Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) Lego Robot Competition which took place at Maryborough House Hotel on Thursday, 17th February 2011. The winning strategy came from the team from Christian Brothers College, Sidney Hill whose robot just got better and better as the competition progressed. The boys from CBC had stiff competition from the girls from
Ursuline Secondary School, Blackrock in a tense and exciting final.
The winning team, who were mentored by David Hayden, Tyndall National Institute, received a Logitech® laptop for their school and each team member also received a Logitech® Squeezebox Wi-Fi player. The team from Beara Community College took the honours for the best electronic solar system design while the team from Christ King won the best project presentation prize.

The competition is undertaken in conjunction with University College Cork (UCC), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), Tyndall National Institute and the support of CEIA member companies. A key aspect of the initiative is that engineers, researchers and technologists from these institutes provide mentor support for the teams and this is an important opportunity to give the students an insight into potential careers in the industry.
From 2008, the 1st and 2nd place teams in this competition earn a place in Ireland's First Lego League. Students will compete in this competition when they are in Transition Year and further details can be found on www.roboticsireland.com
