2012 CEIA Schools Lego Robot Competition - RescueBotTM
Congratulations to Mount Mercy, winners of the 8th Annual Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) Schools Robotics Competition which took place at Cork Institute of Technology on Thursday, 9th February 2012. Ursuline Secondary School, Blackrock took runners-up honours in an all-girl final display of impressive engineering talent.
Competition was intense this year as many teams reached a very high standard and provided much entertainment to the packed Nexus centre. Regular weekly classes held in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UCC helped students to develop their programming and robotics skills and their level of acomplishement impressed all spectators on the night.

Overall Winners and Winners of the Best Poster Presentation: Ioana Grigoras, Marie Casey and Grainne Cowhig from Mount Mercy College. |
Winners of the Best Electronic Beacon Display and Runner-up of the overall competition: Sophie Buckely, Valerie Cordon, Sorcha Casey and Ciara Thornton from Ursuline Secondary School with judges Ted O'Shea, Tyndall; Brian Cassidy, Engineers Ireland and sponsor Brenda Cooper, CEIA. |
The competition is undertaken in conjunction with University College Cork (UCC), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), Tyndall National Institute and the support of CEIA member companies. A key aspect of the initiative is that engineers, researchers and technologists from these institutes provide mentor support for the teams and this is an important opportunity to give the students an insight into potential careers in the industry.
The 1st and 2nd place teams in this competition earn a place in Ireland's First Lego League. Students will compete in this competition when they are in Transition Year and further details can be found on www.roboticsireland.com
